Hi! Welcome to Darumatcha DIY!

Daruma-lover french wife and Matcha-lover Japanese husband bought a 50 year old Japanese abandoned house, which was about to be demolished, and are working on the renovation.

Here is how the house looked like when we bought the house.

Our Tools.

First, let us show you our actual tools. All the buttons are linked for the tools without the batteries. They all are from Makita, and 18 voltage battery models.

Rechargeable or Corded ?

One of the first thing you might have to decide is this. My personal and only conclusion is rechargable. It is because beginners like me can never handle the cords well enough. For examle, about the circular saw, you are too focused on cutting the wood forget about the cord, then cut through the cords as you cut the wood and you have to say good bye to the tool. Rechargable ones might be more expensive but it will be worth it in the end.

Makita or HiKOKI

When you research electric tools in Japan, you will find those two brands everywhere. Personally, those two brands, Makita or HiKOKI, are the best choices. In our case, we were planning to buy a Makita vacuum so we bought Makita tools. If you are pros, you will look into all the details but for beginners like me can just chose one from the look of it.

The only tools I don’t personally recommend are the tools from a brand you have never heard of, or home center domestic brands. These can be good for the price, but nothing else. You might think cheap ones are good to start with but you will want better ones soon. So buying a better ones from the beginning is my recommendation.

Unofficial Batteries

We didn’t buy the official batteries from Makita, but bought those ones below.

We have been using this over a year on daily basis, but we have never faced any problems yet. Apperently some unofficial batteries can explode and cause fire accidents, so if you are not on a tight budget official ones will be more reliable.

Is a circular saw nessecary for a beginner?

I hesitated to buy one at first, but now I think it was a right choice to buy it. The biggest reason is that the cut is assured to be perfectly 90 digree. It’s been more than a year for me to try to cut woods straight, but I always struggle. No matter how much time I spend the cut is always somehow bent. Maybe it’s just me but a circulat saw can solve this problem for me. If you use a tool like the one below, the cut will be always perfectly 90 digree.

Impact driver or Drill driver ?

Personally impact driver is the only choice for beginners like me. It is because impact drivers can do things that drill drivers can, but not the other way around. The feature of drill drivers is sensitive adjustment of the turning speed but it might not be neccesary for beginners like me.

Why multi tool ?

This tool is also a tool that I bought and am very happy with. As the name says, this tool can handle multiple occasions like making a hole for an outlet, sanding and so on. There are blades for irons or stones. This tool made thing easier for us to renovate the house.
